Relay beacons do what their names suggests. They relay magic energies that is summoned beneath the ground via portal. These beacons are massive and can scale to up and beyond the height of a mountain. These beacons are visible from space. There a different parts to a beacon. You have the transmitter tower, which channels the energy from the hole in the ground up and around the planet. You then have the rift hole, which houses the portal and its stabilizers. You then have the outer rings, which encircle the rift hole.
Transmitter Tower
One of the only parts of the beacon to stand above ground. The tower extends from 8,000 feet to 20,000 feet above ground. However, these limits may be exceeded by the type of area the beacon stands in. At the top of the beacon is a platform that holds at least five orbs. There is a center orb surrounded by at least four smaller orbs that channel energy from the larger orb. the larger orb gets its energy from a relay shaft that travels through the center of the beacon all the way into the rift hole.
Located about halfway up the beacon is a cloud that hides orbs of varying sizes. These orbs are the defense mechanism of the beacon, they stop all that wishes to get to the channeling orbs. The orbs also work as channeling orbs, but do not channel the energy out into the surrounding landscape, instead the channel it only to keep themselves levitating in the cloud. When a creature that is not authorized to be near the top enters the cloud, the orbs terminate the creature immediately by channeling the energy. The cloud is also kept activated by the orbs and conceals the top of the beacon. Nearly no race knows of what sits atop the beacons.
The Rift Hole
Below the beacon a hole sits. The hole extends down into the earth farther then the tower sits above it. A shaft travels down into the abyss until it converges with another channeling orb. This orb channels energy from surround orbs that channel energy from a portal that is surrounded by orbs. The orbs are held up by arches that leap over the portal. The orbs also keep the portal active and stable. Not all of the energy of the portal is recovered by the orbs, so the base of the hole is highly energetic. Sometimes mortals fall into the pit and die. The spirits of these mortals become twisted and combined with the excessive amounts of magical energy. They from ethereal beings that wander the base. These creatures are extremely hostile and vengeful towards their enemies. They bear the basic shape of their fore body and have the same behavior.
Lines of orbs rotated around the portal container and channel the energy spirits up towards the top of the hole, letting the wander. The spirits feed and abundances of energy, so they do not wander away from the beacon. However they do cause havoc upon anyone who comes near the hole. This was a unintentional defensive system, but it is effective. The spirits are killable, however, and requires magic siphoning spells to damage them.
The Outer Rings
Around the hole sits multiple rings that house defensive and maintenance systems of the beacon. The first ring that sits closest to the earth is the security ring that houses the orbital control systems and stonic guardians that can be teleported anywhere around the beacon. The security ring usually houses one red spirit that looks over the entire beacon and makes sure everything is right.
Around the base of the rift hole is the pumping ring that pumps the magic encrusted water that settled at the bottom of the pit from rain to the surface. The pools that the pumps dump the water can be anywhere that the beacon channels power to. These mana pools are a key source of alchemical reagents and is used by mana magic users to be a resource of enhanced power.
Above the pumping ring sits the maintenance ring that houses many constructs that almost always stall inactive. They only come online when the structure of the beacon becomes damaged by mortals or natural disaster. They are teleported to where the damage is.
Impact on Mortals
Many mortals question what the beacons are and nearly no one knows what the bacon's true purpose is. Many mortals worship these large structures. Many mine the supports of the beacons, using the strange stone it is made of as armor. Mana pools are highly safe guarded by the race of which that found them. The draconic races respect the beacons and most know their true purpose. Demon races try to channel all the power given off from the beacons for themselves. Some have succeeded in taking out entire towers.
When a shaft is broken, pure magical power is shot out. Demons create mechanisms that channel the power into them and let's them have almost godly powers. These moments don't last long and the demon is usually destroyed or banished.
